Aquatic for hire - worldwide Back to top

Chris Brooks

2009 has been a tough year for the industry, although many analysts feel that we are at the beginning of the end of the downturn. Being an equipment rental company, it's been a static year for us. Yes, like everybody, we have been affected by project slippages and cancellations, but we have also been able to react to requests for equipment and personnel supply at very short notice.

Aquatic will work in 2010 as we have in 2009, by listening - listening to our customers, listening to our employees and listening to our suppliers. Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback - it helps us to help you develop the right solution for your projects.

Aquatic has decided to continue the tradition of a festive quiz ... and like last year, the winner will receive £250 for a charity of their choice.

Engineered solutions Back to top

Supporting our Projects and Service Delivery teams, we have an in-house team of engineers. Headed up by David Tibbetts and with over 100 years of collective experience, the engineering team provides the tangible realisation of the design ideas. The wide diversity of equipment knowledge and experience ensures that they enjoy the challenge of solving problems for our customers; some recent examples of Aquatic’s innovation through expertise are given below...

Issue 1:
  • The recovery of eight mooring lines
  • 756m of rope terminated top and tail with 265m and 82.5m of 850mm chain
  • 85m of water 135km off the coast in North Sea

Solution:

  • Reinforced the hub of standard AQSR-50 reel to increase it’s spooling-on load rating from 10Te to 30Te
  • AQPR-02 powered reel system upgraded to provide 150Te.m of torque
Issue 2:
  • Requirement to secure the inboard end of the product to the reel
  • Product had a large diameter swivel fitting
  • First end of the product onto the reel had a 5m section that had to remain straight

Solution:

  • Starting with the AQSR-49 (11.4m) reel to give maximum footprint partitions were used to support this requirement
  • Working with the customer, a hinged ramp structure was engineered to keep the section straight
Issue 3:
  • Need for 500Te capability with a space constraint on the vessel and in a short timeframe

Solution:

  • Engineers evaluated improvements to existing large powered-reel kit
  • Modifications and enhancements enabled an additional 100Te capacity on existing systems

Feedback Back to top

Listening to customers, and (perhaps more important) acting on the feedback they give is one of the best ways to maintain a successful business. At the end of every project, we endeavour to get feedback on

  • our performance
  • product and service quality and
  • planning and delivery.

To make it easier for you to tell us what you think, we've created an online questionnaire. If we have recently delivered a project for you and you'd like to comment on our capabilities, please do.  Your responses will be used to help us improve our system and the quality of our products and services. Focus on ... our Peterhead Operations base Back to top

In the last issue I made mention of our move into Tern Place House in the Bridge of Don area of Aberdeen. Thirty miles up the coast is our Peterhead Operations base where mobilisation and maintenance of all equipment is performed. One yard (3,000 sq m) forms part of the Aberdeen Service Company (ASCo) complex that is ideally suited for providing services to the North Sea Oil fields. The main Aquatic yard - 1,400 sq m- contains a workshop (1,000 sq m) with 2 x 10Te overhead cranes, fabrication and machining facilities, office and canteen. We encourage our customer's to visit our site ... just contact George Mackintosh if you'd like a look around.
